Several organizations, academic institutions, and international bodies are involved in greening initiatives in Ethiopia

Maastricht School of Management (MSM)

Maastricht School of Management (MSM), part of Maastricht University, is a globally networked business school with a strong focus on sustainable and inclusive private sector development in emerging economies. Through its Expert Centre on Emerging Economies, MSM works with public and private partners to strengthen ecosystems for economic growth by combining applied research, capacity building, and advisory services. The centre emphasizes multi-stakeholder collaboration, including public-private partnerships and Triple Helix approaches, to support green, inclusive, and digital transitions. Within the Greening Ethiopia project, MSM plays a leading role in project coordination, quality assurance, and capacity development, while driving the integration of sustainability assessments, policy support, and practice-oriented learning approaches to enable systemic change in higher education and its links to agriculture and energy value chains.

The International Hellenic University (IHU)

The International Hellenic University’s (IHU) headquarters are in Thessaloniki, Greece. It incorporates 7 Schools with 34 Departments and offers more than 30 undergraduate and 50 postgraduate study programs. The Laboratory of Energy Systems (LES) belongs to IHU and, besides its research activities, is actively involved in educational European funding frameworks like Erasmus+ actions. Being coordinator or partner in numerous Erasmus+ projects, it aims in curriculum development of international study programmes and capacity building for professional groups. LES/IHU’s research team participates as a key partner in the project Greening Ethiopia, having as primary role the evaluation and redesign of four postgraduate programs at Ethiopian universities incorporating energy efficiency technologies. Drawing on its many years of experience in similar postgraduate programs, the team will contribute to the green modernization of the curricula and their alignment with international standards.

The Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC), founded in 1921, is the largest private university in Europe and the largest Catholic university in the world. It is a multi-campus institution with its main headquarters in Milan and additional campuses across Italy.

Ministry of Education (MoE)

The Ministry of Education (MoE) is the central authority for designing, regulating, and overseeing the national education system, spanning primary, secondary, and higher education. The Ministry’s core responsibilities include curriculum development, quality assurance, policy formulation, and supervision of both public and private institutions. It administers national examinations, manages teacher training programs, and operates the Education Management Information System (EMIS) to support evidence-based decision-making. In the higher education sector, the MoE directs admissions processes, oversees national entrance examinations, and ensures that academic programs are aligned with Ethiopia’s economic and social priorities. It places strong emphasis on research and innovation, encouraging universities to generate knowledge that drives national development while addressing local challenges.

Assosa University

Assosa University, established in 2011 and differentiated in 2022 as an Applied Science University in Ethiopia, is committed to producing skilled graduates, advancing applied research, and delivering impactful community service and technology transfer. With strengths in Engineering and Technology, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Geology and Mining, and Humanities, it fosters innovation and sustainable development through multidisciplinary expertise. As a partner in the Greening Ethiopia project, the university contributes to implementation, capacity development, and sustainability integration. Together with MSM, AU leads work package 7 on dissemination, communication, quality assurance, and impact, emphasizing higher education’s links to sustainable energy and agriculture while promoting resilience, green transformation, and inclusive development through thematic research and community engagement.

Bahir Dar University (BDU)

Bahir Dar University (BDU) is one of Ethiopia’s largest and most diverse higher education institutions, committed to advancing knowledge, innovation, and sustainable socio‑economic transformation. Haramaya University (HU) is one of Ethiopia's oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions, primarily known for its pioneering role in agricultural sciences. Founded in 1954 through a partnership with Oklahoma State University, it is located in the East Hararghe Zone, approximately 5 km from the town of Haramaya

Mekelle University (MU)

Mekelle University (MU) is an intensive research University in Ethiopia with mandate on College of Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Ethiopian Institute of Technology-Mekelle. The core focus of Mekelle University is to advance knowledge, economic growth, and social welfare through excellence in teaching, research and community engagement. The University aims to contribute to socio-economic development and sustainable growth in Ethiopia and beyond, emphasizing research and innovation in areas such as climate change, energy and health. Mekelle University is committed to sustainability and aligns its educational programs with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In the Greening Ethiopia project, MU plays a leading role in Work Package 4 (WP4) on Innovation Education, through reviewing M.Sc. in Sustainable Energy Engineering curriculum.
