Erasmus+ Greening Ethiopia Official Kick-Off Event

The Erasmus+ Greening Ethiopia project was officially launched in Addis Ababa, marking an important milestone toward strengthening the role of Ethiopian universities as key drivers of the country’s green transition.

This four-year initiative (2026-2029) aims to enhance higher education policies, improve institutional sustainability, and modernize curricula in sustainable agriculture and renewable energy—directly contributing to Ethiopia’s Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) strategy and aligning with the EU Global Gateway priorities.

Implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and four Ethiopian partner universities – Assosa University, Bahir Dar University, Haramaya University, and Mekelle University – the project will help embed sustainability principles across university operations, research, and teaching. European partners Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Italy) and International Hellenic University (Greece) bring strong expertise in sustainability certification, smart farming, and renewable energy education.

The event was held in the presence of Dr Eba Mijena, CEO of Higher Education Affairs of the Ministry of Education; Dr. Ir. Huub L. M. Mudde, Project Director (MSM); Dr. Fana Hagos, President of Mekelle University; Dr. Abdulmuhsin Hassen, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer at Assosa University; Pro. Eneyew Degu, Vice President of Bahir Dar University; Dr. Jemal Yousuf, President of Haramaya University; along with other key stakeholders.
A panel discussion featured reflections from university leaders on the importance of Greening Ethiopia, its role in supporting institutional development, and practical perspectives on making the project work effectively in practice.

Together, we are shaping a greener and more sustainable future for Ethiopian higher education.
